Davis Vernon came from humble beginnings. Growing up, he didn’t have much, but when he was finally able to save enough to buy his first gaming system, a whole new world opened. Video gaming became a safe and engaging outlet that kept him out of trouble and sparked his creativity.

As an adult, Davis felt called to give back. He saw gaming as a powerful tool to connect with local youth, offering not just entertainment but mentorship and life guidance.

“I feel like video games helps individuals stay out of trouble and also expands their mind to be creative,” he explained.

Driven by a vision that combined the thrill of gaming with community impact, Davis came up with the idea for a mobile gaming arcade. He bought a bus and began transforming it — installing multiple gaming systems, HDTVs, sound systems, and comfortable seating to create the ultimate mobile gaming experience.

With the bus complete, Davis brought his vision to life by launching 4U Gaming in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. The name “4U” reflects the four principles Davis holds dear: he is uncompromising in his commitment to deliver the best gaming experience; unique in offering an experience unlike any other; unified in welcoming gamers of every background and ability; and understanding in his support to enhance each customer’s experience.

To test the waters, 4U Gaming began setting up at local events. Encouraged by early success, Davis sought out resources for small business owners and attended a seminar hosted by the Small Business Development Council (SBDC). There, he was paired with a business advisor who recognized a need for funding to expand and referred him to the Lending Team at Communities Unlimited (CU).

Davis then connected with Chris Tillman, CU’s Economic Development Loan Officer for Mississippi and Tennessee, who helps entrepreneurs secure funding. Chris also introduced Davis to Latoyia Morgan, a Management Consultant on CU’s Entrepreneurship Team, for marketing guidance and sustainability planning.

“Latoyia was great. I was able to bounce ideas off her or give her some information on a direction I was going in and she was very resourceful,” Vernon said. “Chris was awesome as well.”

"Even early on he was very engaged with the business itself. It seemed like he wasn’t just the average person trying to get your business.”

With their support, Davis secured a $25,000 small business loan from CU, providing working capital and covering startup costs for full operations. Now fully operational, 4U Gaming is aiming to thrive — and Davis is energized about the road ahead.

“It’s calming when you know, as a small business owner without much experience in the field, that you have people you can rely on to give you advice or tell you what you’re doing is correct and that you’re headed in the right direction,” Davis said. “Overall my experience working with CU was great.

I really appreciate how invested they were in my business, and I hope to work with you guys in the future as my business expands.”
