Summary of Position
The Community Facilitator effectively engages and guides targeted communities to enable the building of local capacity to envision entrepreneurial opportunities and to develop and sustain strategies to move their community toward prosperity. Pursuant to the community’s self-defined strategy, the Community Facilitator leverages and closely coordinates with other Communities Unlimited staff and other strategic partners to implement training and technical assistance to complete tasks necessary to accomplish strategic goals and desired community sustainability outcomes.

Position Requirements

OPTION A: Bachelor’s degree in community and economic development, political science, sociology, or public administration with at least 3-years-experience working in community development or community organizing. Must be authorized to work in the U.S.A.
Professional experience should demonstrate:

  • Experience that demonstrates a working knowledge of challenges faced by rural communities in CU’s geographic service area.
  • Demonstrated success securing program funding program. Experience writing successful federal / state grant applications is preferred.
  • Strong preference for experience collaborating with a wide variety of stakeholders.
  • Must be located or willing to relocate to CU’s 7 state service area.

The Community Environmental Management Specialist provides onsite technical assistance and training to rural community environmental management systems with water or waste disposal problems and needs in the areas of project planning, financing, utility management and administration. Communities Unlimited is one of six regional non-profit organizations that are partners in the national Rural Community Assistance Partnership (RCAP) through which these services are available in all U.S.A. and territories.

Education/Certification Requirements
A Bachelor’s degree is required. Preference is given for a degree in business, management, finance, public administration, environmental science or closely related field. Current Water or Wastewater Operator Certification with experience in operating and/or managing community environmental management systems is a plus.

Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable personal vehicle for travel to project communities.

Must be authorized to work in the USA

Experience/Skills Requirements
A minimum of 5 years of experience of previous field experience in working with rural community development programs, community environmental systems, or in conducting training is required. Experience that demonstrates a familiarity with engineering practices, terminologies and procedures related to water and wastewater systems design and operation is preferred.
A successful Community Environmental Management Specialist will be able to:

  • Effectively communicate in both written and verbal formats.
  • Deliver results in an environment with high-degree of self-directed time management and project management.
  • Understand basic financial statements, operational and capital improvement project budgeting.
  • Deliver high degree of accuracy with attention to detail in work products

The position requires travel throughout the assigned state to provide onsite technical assistance to rural community water and/or wastewater system decision makers and management. This travel may average 20 hours per week, driving to communities throughout the state, and may include overnight stays away from the office location. In addition, periodic travel to CU staff meetings, RCAP national meetings, or other meetings in other states which may be accomplished by the most cost effective means to CU (private vehicle, air, or other public transportation).

Summary of Position
The Lending Associate position is responsible for marketing of loans products and other services available from Communities Unlimited (CU); originations, underwriting and managing loan requests from throughout our target market; monitoring the performance of loan portfolios; and providing accurate and complete impact data for reporting. This position is responsible for developing and managing a variety of relationships, including with: borrower organizations; financial institutions; state and federal agencies; consultants and advisors; other public/private institutions; peers and team members; loan committees; and the CU Senior Leadership Team. The Loan Officer will contribute data, stories and other information needed for marketing and/or fundraising efforts of the Senior Leadership Team.

Education/Certification Requirements
This position requires a minimum of Associate’s Degree in accounting, business, or related field. Must hold a valid drivers-license (state of residency) and have a reliable personal vehicle and maintain at least the state minimum personal automotive liability insurance required for job-related travel within a typical 50-300-mile radius from the assigned CU Field office location within seven state region. Must be authorized to work in the USA.

Experience/Skills Requirements
A minimum of one year of experience underwriting and servicing small business loans is required. Preference is given to individuals who also have accounting experience.

Summary of Essential Job Duties
Pursuant to Internal Funding Budgets and as assigned by supervisor, engage five (5) to eight (8) target communities for sustainability facilitation each year
Organize target communities for action by conducting initial stakeholder mapping, outreach to potential stakeholders, and facilitate introductory local Community Sustainability meetings
Identify potential local leaders to establish a Community Sustainability Team (“CS Team”) members and a CS Team Coordinator who will serve as your “sparkplug” to keep the CS Team engaged and on task
Facilitate follow-up meeting(s) to guide the CS Team through a Community Wealth Analysis to assess community assets and resources needs, ongoing community development projects to envision opportunities and corresponding known or potential barriers and identify other CU Service needs.
Support development of an Opportunity Assessment that includes the potential utilization of CU Portfolio Services (Entrepreneurial, RCAP, Lending, Technology, or other) for community sharing in development of local ideas
Collaborate with other CU staff leveraged by supervisor to identify other assistance tasks for inclusion in and develop of the draft Community Strategy Report to include timeline for assistance tasks implementation
Facilitate meeting(s) with CS Team to implement their Community Strategy using CU tools.
Assess resource needs and facilitate connection with additional resources if needed and follow-up with local CS Community Coach monthly where applicable
Solicit business referrals as the opportunity arises and provide follow up as needed
Coordinate with engaged CU staff regularly to determine status of tasks / goals / outcomes and report achieved goals and outcomes to supervisor
Facilitate communication and celebration of successes both in community and organizationally

  • Attend CU staff meetings whether virtual or in person
  • The employee shall work well under pressure; meeting multiple and sometimes competing deadlines. The employee shall at all times demonstrate cooperative behavior with colleagues and supervisors.
  • Maintain the highest level of confidentiality and security with all information, understanding your obligations in regards to client data, community environmental system data, borrower data, payroll data, HR data, medical information, workers compensation insurance data, IT data, computer passwords, email account passwords, phone lock codes, etc.
  • Accurate and timely submission of time and expenses in compliance with CU policy and supervisor direction, understanding this record in a critical part of CU’s compliance with grants and contracts
  • Comply with corporate branding and communication requirements and support corporate communication processes by submitting client stories, securing releases for use of client quotes/images; media capture (photos, videos, etc.) and collaborating with communications staff to promote events, loan closings, community projects and milestones and client businesses.
  • Special projects, and other duties as may be assigned from time to time by supervisor
