In San Jacinto County — a rural part of Southeast Texas just northeast of Houston — a simple idea turned into something much bigger.
With support from the Community Sustainability Team at Communities Unlimited (CU) and funding through the Trust for Civic Life, Community Resource Manager Yolanda Martin helped bring local seniors out of isolation and into a space filled with music, laughter, and connection.
On February 19, residents from the Woodlands Park Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center were transported to the Family Restaurant in Shepherd, Texas, where they joined volunteers and community members for an afternoon of activities designed to engage both mind and body.
Through the Inspiring Hope Outreach Initiative, led by Dr. Anita Wright of Wright-Way Community Development, the event brought together eight volunteers and a dozen residents — some of whom rarely have opportunities to leave their facilities due to transportation barriers.
Funding supported brain-boosting activities — from puzzles and painting to large-print games and music — enhancing memory, fine motor skills, and overall engagement. But what stood out most was the sense of community.
Volunteers sang alongside residents, spent time in conversation, and created a welcoming environment where seniors could simply enjoy the moment. A local business owner opened her space for the event, while others contributed their time, energy, and resources to make it possible.
For Wright, the impact went beyond the activities.
“This is community caring for people in the community,” she said. “It’s churches, organizations, and neighbors coming together to show pride and care for the residents who helped build it. Many of them lived here but are now in nursing homes or homebound, unable to do what they once did — even though they served this community so vibrantly in their younger years. They were so excited. They were asking when we can do it again.”
What started as a small investment became something more — a moment of connection, powered by community.
Sometimes, it doesn’t take much.
Just the right support at the right time to remind people they’re not forgotten.
“I was so grateful and thankful for Yolanda Martin and Communities Unlimited,” Dr. Wright said. “I’ve never worked with an organization that cared like that.”
"Funding like this helps us do things in the community that otherwise wouldn’t happen.”
