Broad Avenue (2013)
Born from the idea that retail plays a vital role in revitalizing neighborhoods, MEMShop activates vacant storefronts – for days, weeks, or months – to help build local businesses and increase a community’s visibility and vibrancy. Broad Avenue was the start of our incuabator/accelerator program model. See the video below to hear what our MEMShop neighbors think about the program.
MEMShop creates partnerships to activate spaces, test business concepts, and provide business managerial assistance and support services to help sustain and grow local businesses.
Here are the pioneers of the MEMShop six month incubator/accelerator program. These 6 MEMShops launched on Broad Avenue beginning in the spring of 2013:
- Creation Studios: 2655 Broad Ave. A creative studio specializing in professional wedding, family and commercial photography and videography.
- Memphis Guitar Spa: 2561 Broad Ave. Memphis Guitar Spa offers a wide range of bespoke services. Hand rubbed finishing in a wide variety of colors and styles, inlay in your choice of material, custom part fabrication…you name it!
- My Heavenly Creations: Beginning as a hobby and perfected after many months of research, testing and mistakes, My Heavenly Creations went from personal use to personal business, developing and offering hand-crafted soaps, bath salts, bath bombs, shower melts and noby butter, and much more.
- Five In One Social Club: 2535 Broad Ave. Kindergarten for grown folks. Five in One Social Club combines a socially based creative teaching facility with a studio practice and a “Made in Memphis” retail store, which offers exclusive, artist-made goods.
- NJ Woods Gallery & Design: Formed in 2007 to promote the artistic vision of Memphis artist, NJ Woods Gallery & Design offers the public the opportunity to purchase NJ’s works and provides design services for start-ups and small businesses.
- Modern Handmade Memphis (formerly Indie Style Market): Beginning as series of handmade shows held in 2010 and 2011, sponsored by the Memphis Melange Etsy Team, and then producing the highly successful Indie Style Market @ MEMShop Popup @ Overton Square in December 2012, Modern Handmade has evolved into a brick and mortar store showcasing the best in handmade, local, and independently designed merchandise from all over the Midsouth

Co-Motion was another of our pioneer MEMShop incubator/accelerator businesses that launched late 2013:
Co-Motion: 416 North Cleveland St. Co-Motion Studio is a community movement arts studio offering recreational movement and fitness classes, workshops, special events, and programming aimed at uplifting individuals and the Memphis community.
Overton Square (December 2012)
Overton Square was the start of our multi-week temporary MEMShop model. There were over 40 local creatives, makers, artists and artisans represented during this holiday popup market from Dec. 6 – Dec 23.
The pop-up also featured music performances, classes and community events. Over the course of four weeks, thousands visited the Holiday Market at Overton Square. Retailers generated over $100,000 in revenue.
